Congratulations on asking the crucial question of “is skydiving safe”. The fact that you manage risks intelligently says a lot about your commendable character! At Boston Skydive Center, we are dedicated to addressing the all-important question of skydiving safety.

The act of getting from the door of an airplane in flight to the ground via a parachute and the guidance of a professional skydiver might seem unsafe to some. However, this assumption is false when you review the facts, which we present in this article.

Is Skydiving Safe? Skydiving Safety Explained

FACT #1: Safety Varies Across Dropzones

Skydiving is safer now than it has ever been in history. In 2022, the USPA recorded 20 fatal skydiving accidents out of approximately 3.9 million jumps, which translates to a fatality rate of about 0.51 per 100,000 jumps (or 2.5 per 500,000 jumps). When it comes to tandem skydiving, (which is what we do here at Boston Skydive Center) there is an even better safety rate with one student fatality per 500,000 jumps on average over the past 10 years. This impressive safety record is largely thanks to the United States Parachute Association (USPA), which has played a pivotal role in policy and technology development to enhance safety. Dropzones who are members of the USPA have agreed to follow stringent safety requirements, engage in regular gear maintenance, hire only eminently experienced, licensed professionals and meticulously maintain the skydiving aircraft they use. Boston Skydive Center is a proud member of the United States Parachute Association. This means that we not only adhere to all of the USPA’s safety recommendations and guidelines, but we also take their safety statistics seriously. The USPA has been carefully collecting skydiving safety statistics for many years–and can mathematically prove that the safety of skydiving is not only significantly better than most “extreme” activities, it’s only getting better with time. In fact, that goes for actual skydiving athletes, many of whom make a hundred jumps or more per month. Tandem skydiving is even safer! Especially if you are new to skydiving, tandem skydiving is generally safer than solo skydiving because you are paired with an experienced instructor who controls the jump and manages all critical aspects, including parachute deployment and emergency procedures. If you choose not to jump with us at Boston Skydive Center, please note that not all dropzones in the US are members of the USPA. If you’re looking at a dropzone, do yourself a favor and double check to ensure they are a USPA member.

While fatalities in tandem skydiving are extremely rare (about one in 500,000 jumps), they are not non-existent. However, the risk involved in skydiving is less than that of many daily activities, such as your morning commute. The statistical likelihood of a skydiving accident is lower than many might think.

In a healthy life, we take risks every single day. Some are more exceptional than others, of course: weaving a motorcycle through traffic, riding your bicycle on a busy street, swimming in the ocean, rock climbing, etc. Even though jumping out of an airplane might appear to be a much more significant risk, it’s not. The numbers speak for themselves.

Because living a life entirely without risk is impossible–and trying to erase risk from life is stagnating–we have to manage risk. We have to take measured, calculated, intelligent, life-affirming risks that underline the awesome beauty of a life well-lived. Tandem skydiving at Boston Skydive Center is a great way to do just that.
